“We should not try to motivate people. I think we should create an environment where great people thrive. And we create that environment by hiring and getting the right talent into the organization, but then the next step is for managers to be very clear to their people about why we are doing certain things and what we are trying to achieve. And then letting people really go and have as much autonomy and independence as they can. If you hire great people and you tell them why and what needs to be achieved and then you let them be, that is the best motivation you can give them. Because then they really want to go for it; they see something as meaningful and they can contribute. If you are willing to then step in and help them if they need it, or give them useful feedback or coaching or remove obstacles so they can keep going, I think this is where good people really thrive.”
